I was just watching the AFC Challenge Cup game between India and Afghanistan. Not by design, merely by accident. But anyway, when I put it on, 89 minutes were already over and the match was heading into injury time (3 minutes) with the score at 0-0. This was apparently the 60th anniversary of the Indian football team and the commentators were dismayed that India couldn’t win to mark the occasion. Almost everyone had resigned themselves to the fact that this match would end as a bore draw. The coach Bob Houghton was asleep in the dug-out.
And then, in the 92nd minute, India threw everyone forward in one final attack at the Afghan goal. To the utter shock of everyone, including the coach (who had woken up), the players managed to string a few passes together and somehow get the ball in to the opposite D. After some goalmouth confusion, an Indian midfielder drove the ball into an empty net to score the match-winning goal with virtually the last kick of the game. It was over!! India had won the game in the final minute!!
That midfielder was this guy:
And his name, his ACTUAL name, (I swear I’m not kidding, this IS his REAL name) was: “CLIMAX Lawrence”!!
Hahahahahaha… FAAAAAAAACCCKKKK!!

If Aaj Tak were an English channel, this would’ve been breaking news for all of next week!
However, the very fact that not many people have heard of Climax Lawrence is an indication of the fact that most people are totally ignorant about Indian football or that the media ignores the sport with extreme prejudice.

Hehehe… this is like a pun-loving-journalist or a ‘punnalist’s’ dream come true. Sample this..”Lawrence provides the Climax”, a headline in TOI the next day.
BTW, you could watch one of those matches live since you are coming to Hyd. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend the quiz as I have some friggin’ exams to write.

Thanks for all the kind words. Appreciate the love. I’m not going to delete your post, but jI’d just like to point out a few things.
1) I was laughing at the name, and I also laugh at funny names of International footballers. But yes, you make a valid point. The play is pretty laughable too.
2) Indian football hasn’t excited me enough to make me want to watch it over and over again. And I’m not going to do it just because it is my nation. That’s like saying I enjoy Bhojpuri movies more than Hollywood ones because I’m an Indian. I don’t, and that’s just it. I also don’t watch test cricket. You are welcome to your opinion.
3) However, I will still support the Indian Football team IF, and WHEN they face England/Brazil etc.
You are obviously a great, knowledgeable and passionate fan of Indian Sport. God bless you.

Climax is a below par player for me. He is a holding midfielder and more of defensive option for India on the ground but his tackling and match fitness are to be questioned. I am sure that the Indian team doesn’t have a good replacement there and that is why Bob Houghton is persisting with him.
The defensive midfielder position is a position where someone with good tackling skills play and he should be able to snub all the movements the other team make from the midfield. At least he should come near them for a tackle or hassle. Climax, watches on at times, while the action happens in the midfield… and this is not the characteristic of great player. I am grateful to him for the goal. As a whole, i would say he is one of the under performers in Indian football team.
